Hugh Jackman may be a master of getting deep into character, but the star has already made an early escape from a highly-anticipated new role.

The actor announced on Monday that he was pulling out of Houdini, the much-hyped Broadway musical about the famed escape artist’s life, scheduled to open in 2013.

People reports that Hugh, who had originally announced his intention to tackle the difficult role in 2012, explained of his choice to back out of the project, “I have greatly enjoyed the collaborative process on Houdini. Ultimately, though, I wasn't able to commit to the time this role will require."

While he may be down one acting credit on his resume (not that it needs enhancing), the time off during the holiday season frees the Wolverine star up to indulge in some of his favorite family activities with wife Deborra-Lee Furness and his kids, Ava and Oscar.

“My kids are getting older but we genuinely look forward to watching the same movies,” the star told People. “There have been great animated movies, but now they're getting into live action stuff. But Elf, for years, has been the one that my wife and the kids have all liked.”
