Are you sitting down? Because we’ve just heard Jennifer Lawrence almost didn’t star in Silver Linings Playbook. The role that landed her an Oscar for Best Actress and solidified her spot as one of Hollywood’s brightest young talents was originally intended for another starlet.
Who let the cat out of the bag? None other than bigwig Harvey Weinstein in a January 15 interview with Howard Stern.
Howard asked his famous guest if it drives him “insane” when he can’t get the actress he just knows “is going to be right for the movie.”
Harvey explained that such dilemmas don’t drive him nuts because “I’ve always believed that if we can’t get somebody established, we’ll find somebody new.” The moviemaker even had an example at the ready: Jennifer Lawrence, in one of 2012’s biggest movies not involving a bow and arrow.
“Silver Linings Playbook was originally going to be with Mark Wahlberg and Anne Hathaway,” says Harvey, causing our jaws to drop to the floor. The Les Miserables star (and Oscar winner) was “my choice, I love her” but eventually dropped out of the project because of “creative differences” with the film’s director, David O. Russell.
“They didn’t see eye-to-eye,” Harvey vaguely explains.
Although stumped at who could possibly replace his beloved Annie, Harvey knew they had someone special the moment he saw Jennifer audition. “This amazing creature walked in who is a brilliant actress, and so much fun, and she won an Oscar,” he says.
And she may just be on her way to winning another if American Hustle has anything to do with it.
