A big welcome out to Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees! The frontman publicly came out as gay in a recent interview with Rolling Stone.

“I’ve always felt like I’m an open book, and yet obviously I haven’t been completely,” the 30-year-old Provo, Utah, local tells RS. He started a brand new chapter earlier today (March 24) when he tweeted, “Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star. I don't know what it all means, but I’m ok with it.”

A Mormon his whole life, Tyler says while he knew he was gay from a young age, he kept his sexuality secret despite the emotional snarls it got him into.

“I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my twenties,” he says. “Then I’d be dating girls and in love with my straight friend and it was the worst feeling.”

As for what it’s like to be Mormon and gay, Tyler can pinpoint only one time that “felt different.”

“We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance.’ The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up,” he says. The Prop 8 thing, of course, being when the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent upwards of $20 million fighting the legalization of same-sex marriage in California.

Tyler just started telling friends and family he’s gay last October and says he chronicled much of his coming out process in his band’s upcoming LP, Pop Psychology. We can’t wait to hear it, Tyler!
