Kelly Clarkson’s gone completely country, y’all! Actually, that shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to any of us Kelly fans, as she’s been doing the crossover thing for quite some time. To boot, the pregnant star — who is due in a couple months or so — is basically country royalty. After marrying hubby Brandon Blackstock, Kelly is now the daughter-in-law of famed country singer Reba McEntire. In fact, the two have performed Kelly’s song, “Because Of You,” as a duet.
Now country fans have another reason to celebrate. Kelly’s latest country collaboration is with superstar Martina McBride. As Glamour points out in its story about the single, one might expect a ballad from these two particular performers. Instead, their duet of “In the Basement” is a super fun, bluesy number originally recorded by Etta James and Sugar Pie DeSanto back in 1966.
We have loved Kelly ever since her killer rendition of Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” during season one of American Idol. “In the Basement” brings us back to the moment, as Kelly’s rich voice perfectly complements that of Martina’s country vocals. Guitar and heavy piano give this song a rockin' beat, and we’d kill to see this one performed live.
Fans can preview the song below; it’ll be released on Martina’s upcoming record, Everlasting, due out on April 8, just a handful of weeks before Kelly herself is due!
