A woman in Atlanta, Georgia, was astonished when her family was asked to leave a restaurant recently. The reason? Her 4-year-old nephew’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles t-shirt violated the establishment’s “gentlemen’s dress code.”

According to local news outlet 11Alive Atlanta, Lewis Roberts, age 4, was dining with his family, including aunt Keri Smith, at the Tavern at Phipps in the Buckhead neighborhood, when their hostess told the family they would have to leave due to the dress code violation. In complete disbelief, the family asked to speak to a manager.

Keri says the manager then came over explained that the Lewis’ sleeveless t-shirt violated the dress code posted outside the restaurant that states, “No sleeveless shirts for gentlemen.”

The little boy’s aunt explained to 11Alive, “I was very very upset that my nephew was asked to leave a restaurant, in the middle of the day, and he’s four. If we thought for a minute that he was inappropriately dressed, we would have gone to a different restaurant...”

A spokesperson for the Tavern at Phipps told 11Alive via email that they would like to apologize profusely for the incident, saying: “Rule does not apply for children and ladies — for gentleman only. It was an embarrassing misunderstanding on our part. She's a manager in training who had a gross misunderstanding of our policy. We apologize and are reaching out to the family.”

The restaurant reached out to the family and personally apologized. Keri says she accepted their apology, and that her family looks forward to dining at the restaurant again soon.
