Guys, Wendy Williams is having one phenomenal 50th birthday, today (July 18). The radio-turned-TV talk show host has just announced the exciting news that Lifetime’s Aaliyah biopic, Aaliyah: Princess of R&B, will resume with a new star after Zendaya Coleman’s departure. But that’s not all. Wendy also announced that Wendy Williams Productions will be working on the movie as well, with Wendy herself as an executive producer.
The news, which came during today’s airing of The Wendy Williams Show, was posted on the show’s Facebook fanpage. The post went on to say that Debra Martin Chase will serve as Wendy’s fellow executive producer and actress Alexandra Shipp will play Aaliyah. Production is set to begin later this month.
Little is currently known about any lingering legal issues regarding Aaliyah’s music, which were previously reported, but we’re hoping that the kinks will be worked out in time before production begins. As you know, Zendaya said she ultimately stepped out of the role of Aaliyah because “it wasn’t a good choice” for her as things weren’t “100 percent taken care of.”
We don’t know about you, but we’re actually a little excited to see where this movie may go, as Wendy is a firm believer that TV movies are the next best thing, and she was in the midst of the music industry with her radio show during Aaliyah’s rise to stardom.
