Anderson Cooper can see again after a painful ordeal in which he went totally blind for more than a day.

The talk show host and journalist was filming a 60 Minutes story in Portugal last week when he lost his eyesight due to "UV light bouncing off the water," Anderson wrote on Instagram, accompanying a photo of himself with gauze over his right eye.

"I wake up in the middle of the night and it feels like my eyes are on fire," he explains on his show, Anderson Cooper Live. "It turns out I have sunburned my eyeballs and I go blind. I went blind for 36 hours. I took this picture of me after I went to the hospital."

Proving he didn't lose his sense of humor, he joked to his audience, "That's my new Match.com profile picture, by the way."

NBC's chief medical editor, Dr. Nancy Snyderman, warns that this retina burn could have been much more serious. "It's a reminder that frankly everyone needs sunglasses," she says. And she also tells Anderson, "Fortunately for you, you're going to be fine, but it's a real reminder."

Thank goodness he's okay now!
