We’re pretty sure we’re not the only ones who instantly laugh out loud every time Sadie says “You’re welcome.” Remember in The Dark Knight, when Heath Ledger’s Joker showed up in Harvey Dent’s hospital room dressed as a nurse, and all he said was, “Hi,” and the entire theater burst out laughing? In a (only slightly) less sinister way, that’s how we feel when Sadie tells Jenna, “You’re welcome,” after slipping money in Jenna’s cleavage.
On Awkward Season 2, Episode 6: “What Comes First: Sex or Love?” Sadie wasn’t the only one making us laugh. Or cringe, or want to cry, or say “Aww!” Even Sadie’s story was kind of adorable.
Jenna is still stressing over the fact that when Jake told her he loves her on Valentine’s Day, she said “Awesome” in response. Tamara and Ming tell her that her confusion just means she isn’t in love. Tamara even points out her old “I heart MM” on her notebook in class, and Jenna wonders, “Was my residual love for Matty clouding my new love for Jake?”
Meanwhile, Sadie is having hate-make-outs with Ricky (Tamara’s ex), but while all she can think about is getting out her anger via his mouth, all Ricky can think about is how much he adores his new “Dollface.” He actually likes Sadie, and quits the band to prove it to her.
After Jenna remembers that she only realized she loved Matty after they had sex, she has a new plan: She’ll just have to have sex with Jake to know how she really feels. Too bad she decides to tell him while leaning over the school’s PA system, essentially telling the entire school, “I think we should have sex.”
Cue: Sadie’s aforementioned “You’re welcome” hilarity, but also a surprising move from Matty. All season, it’s been more than obvious that Matty is still in love with Jenna. He even said so on New Year’s! But after Jenna’s sex plans are revealed to everyone, including Matty, he sidles up to Jenna at school and starts acting all chummy. He tells her that if they can talk about things like sex, Jake, and what’s going on in their lives, then maybe they can really be friends.
Did you buy that? Because somehow, we didn’t.
After Jenna and Jake try to “just do it” that same day at Jenna’s house, they walk right into an emotional crisis drenched in afternoon wine. Jenna’s mom and aunt (and guidance counselor) are talking about “huge vajayjays,” gold-digging, and accidentally reveal that Lacey had sex with someone else before meeting Jenna’s dad. Oh, and Sadie might become Jenna’s cousin if her uncle marries Jenna’s aunt.
But Lacey clears things up for Jenna by explaining that the guy she had sex with before meeting Jenna’s dad was someone who she didn’t know she loved until after they did it (i.e. Matty), and when it came to Jenna’s dad, she knew at the same time (i.e. Jake).
Moments later, Jenna decides to meet Jake in his adorably decked out minivan. They wind up doing it, but only after Jake expresses just how much he really loves Jenna. He doesn’t want to have sex with her if Jenna realizes she doesn’t feel the same way. In her head, Jenna “realizes” she does love Jake. But we know, deep down, that she still has Matty in the back of her head, and always will.
Do you think Jenna is really in love with Jake, or is she just fooling herself?
