Did you just assume Beyonce sang live during yesterday's 2013 Presidential Inauguration? We did. Washingtonian and the The Times of London are reporting that Beyonce lip-synched her way through the performance, and CNN has backed up the reports.

A spokeswoman for the Marine Corp Band told The Times it’s standard procedure to record a backing track, and Beyonce decided shortly before her performance to rely on the studio version rather than risk singing it live. As their story noted, Yo Yo Ma pre-recorded his cello performance in 2008 because the weather may have affected his instrument, but singers usually do perform live.

"We don't know why Beyonce decided to use prerecorded music," a spokesperson for the Marine Corps Band added to the Washingtonian on Tuesday. "All music [for inaugural ceremonies] is prerecorded as a matter of course, and that's something we've done for years and years. The Marine Band did perform live throughout the ceremony but we received last-minute word that Beyonce wanted to use the recording."

This person added that we all know Beyonce is an amazing singer, so her decision had no bearing on her ability. She probably just wanted everything to be perfect on the POTUS's big day and didn't want to risk a gaffe as distraction. Besides, according to BuzzFeed, Beyonce didn't have much time to rehearse. Kelly Clarkson was in over the weekend to rehearse and record, but Beyonce was getting ready for her Super Bowl halftime show so she didn't have a chance to work with the band until the night before the inauguration.

Either way, her performance sounded great (watch it below). Are you surprised? Does it matter to you? Are you less impressed because it wasn't live, or not really?
