Way back when, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie said they wouldn't get hitched until same-sex marriage was legal for everyone. Well, they got engaged anyway, but that doesn't mean their strong feelings on the matter have changed.
In fact, Brad just sent an e-mail to the Human Rights Campaign addressing the upcoming marrige equality votes in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington. "It's unbelievable to me that people's lives and relationships are literally being voted on in a matter of days," Brad wrote. "If you're like me, you don't want to have to ask yourself on the day after the election, what else could I have done?" And so, he writes, "here's what I'm going to do. If you make a contribution to these ballot measure campaigns in the next 24 hours, I'll double it – every dollar of the way, up to $100,000."
People.com posted a story on Brad's donation, and some commenters were frustrated that he would be willing to give so much to this issue when, to them, there are more pressing causes — including support for the people in New York and New Jersey who lost their homes during Hurricane Sandy.
Here's a selection of comments:
• "Hey Brad have you seen the East Coast in America today? Have you seen where some friends and relatives of yours live? Have you looked? America can use the $100,000 so could those people. You give to other countries. How about America? $100,000 is abou 1.2% of what your worth, like 5 bucks to us, you can do it."
• "hey brad pitt here is an idea...although i 100% support marriage equality, maybe re route that donation to NJ red cross."
• "He should of donated that much money to people who actually need it. Gay people aren't going to die or starve because they can't marry each other. I think it's great he supports the cause, but donated $100,000?? The could of fed a lot of kids."
• "meanwhile many people in NYC and NJ lost their homes and everything they ever worked for their entire lives. There are so many issues out there that are infinitely more important than that, people's lives are literally depending on it. How many lives are pending on whether a stupid marriage equality law gets approved? How many people will get a warm bed to sleep tonight or electricity back because Brad Pitt donated 100 grand to pass a law that will only give people pride? Let's focus on basic needs, people. Donating money to pass this law is a luxury we don't have right now."
But it's not like the causes are mutually exclusive. Why can’t he support both? Yes, $100K is a lot, but not that much considering what Brad and Angie have donated in general. As one commenter noted, "You do realize that he has donated $$ to so many causes, the rebuilding of New Orleans as a major one? It's his money and he can donate to whoever he choses. Besides, how do we know that he hasn't donated money towrds the recent destruction that Sandy caused? Have you donated money or volunteered with the Red Cross?"
It's his dime, he can spend it how he wants. But do you think his timing was off, announcing this just as the U.S. recovers from Sandy? It's too bad he didn't do it last week.
