In the weeks leading up to the November 16 premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2, much has been made about the movie’s surprise twist ending — a “twist” in the sense that it deviates somewhat from Stephenie Meyer’s YA novel.
Back in mid-September, star Kristen Stewart teased, “[T]he end throws you for a loop, even if you’re expecting it.”
So, what exactly goes down? Read on for a quickie summary...

It turns out the twist is a bloody battle montage in which a slew of main characters die and Edward (Robert Pattinson) and Bella (Kristen Stewart) slay Aro (Michael Sheen), the leader of the Volturi. But the battle isn’t real; it’s a vision of what could have been had the two sides clashed, courtesy of Alice’s (Ashley Greene) mental communication with Aro.
According to Entertainment Weekly, this violent confrontation is hinted at in the book, when Edward explains to the remaining vampires that the Volturi decided to not mess with them as a result of Bella’s special abilities. He says, “Aro knew that with Zafrina on our side, they would be the blind ones when the battle commenced. I’m sure our numbers would have been pretty severely decimated, but they were sure that theirs would be, too. There was even a good possibility that they would lose. They’ve never dealt with that possibility before. They didn’t deal with it well today.”
Essentially, the movie takes those sentences and turns them into an uber-dramatic battle scene. Boom, there’s your surprise ending.
Stephenie Meyer revealed as much during a November 1 press junket. “I wouldn’t call it an alternate ending,” she explained (via Zap2it). “In a way, it’s kind of offscreen in the novel because we only see what Bella sees. This was just a way of making visual what some of the other characters might have been seeing. It does feel very surprising. [...] But to me it doesn't seem like we’re going hugely off the page at all.”
