The new CW reality series Breaking Pointe is our newest guilty pleasure. The show hooked us with a heartbreaking twist in its debut episode. Katie Martin and her boyfriend, Ronald Tilton, were torn apart when he got a contract to continue with the Salt Lake City Ballet Company Ballet West and she was fired!
The company’s Artistic Director, Adam Sklute, seemed to be the typical heartless boss, as he told Katie, on-camera, “I don’t think I’m going to have a place for you next year,” which had her in tears.
But Adam told Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview that giving budding ballet stars the boot is “the worst part of my job. Those emotions weren’t pretend. Let’s just put it that way.”
The ballet boss also said the decision wasn’t an easy one. “I never make a decision when I’m letting go of a dancer for superficial reasons. It’s got to be from a complicated number of reasons. Sometimes the worst part of it is if there’s a dancer I really, really love who, like Katie, I just don’t have a position available for, or needs something before I can bring her in. So I do hope that people like that go on to thrive in another organization, and of course, I have remorse. But ultimately, I want them to be happy and have a good job.”
Still, don’t count Katie out, as Adam admitted other dancers have improved and made a comeback at his company. “That’s happened on a number of occasions.”
Although Adam came across as a perfectionist on Breaking Pointe, he insisted, “certainly in a situation like Katie’s, that was a no hard feelings situation. I loved her very much, and I wish her the absolute best. And she knows the door is always open.”
Breaking Pointe airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
