Psyched for The Carrie Diaries? You’re not alone. Sex and the City fans can hardly wait to get their first look at the hotly anticipated CW series that will chronicle Carrie Bradshaw’s teenage years. The show will be based on the best-selling novel of the same name by author Candace Bushnell, who also penned its predecessor Sex and the City, as well as Summer in the City.
Wetpaint Entertainment spoke with Candace as well as executive producer Josh Schwartz at The CW upfront event in NYC on May 17, 2012 about why they were so keen to do the show and what they’ve got in store for us!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What inspired you to do a show about Carrie’s high school years?
Josh Schwartz: We all know Carrie in terms of where we met her on Sex and the City. Now, we’re going to see how she grew up and became that character. What were the things in her youth that shaped her? How did she become into the woman that we know?
We never learned much about Carrie’s family on SATC. Will we get to know them now?
Candace Bushnell: Yes, it’s all about her high school years and growing up, so we will get to know her family.
You know, when I wrote Sex and the City, it was a time in my life when I felt that people moved to New York and made their own families — so we never saw anything about the character’s real families. And then, as I got older, I’ve thought more about family and it made me think about Carrie’s family and what they’re like. It made me want to go back in time.
Will we meet the other women during their high school years? Will we see a teenage Miranda or Charlotte?
Candace Bushnell: No. It won’t work that way. They didn’t go to high school together. As you can read in Summer in the City, Carrie doesn’t meet Samantha and Miranda until she gets to New York. This is just about Carrie.
AnnaSophia Robb, who plays Carrie, has some pretty big shoes to fill. How do you think she’s doing?
Candace Bushnell: It’s such a hard part and she’s done so beautifully. I think viewers will fall in love with her the same way they fell in love with Sarah Jessica Parker.
From what we do know, Carrie seems to come from humble means. So she wont be able to afford the designer labels she loves. How will she work around that?
Candace Bushnell: She’s going to wear a lot of vintage. She’s also a teenager and, let’s face it, they can get away with anything!
