Fall is a hard time for TV fans. The number of new shows hitting the air in the next few weeks is both exciting and totally overwhelming. How are we supposed to choose what to watch, what to DVR, and what to ignore and hope gets cancelled by Thanksgiving?

Well, luckily for us, FOX has decided to release the pilot for their new sitcom, New Girl, on iTunes. After watching it, we can tell you this is one show that should go on your watch list.

New Girl is a classic "friends living together in a ridiculously large apartment" sitcom, but with a twist. It stars hipster it-girl Zooey Deschanel (of (500) Days of Summer fame) as the quirky, socially stunted Jess Day, who discovers — in a hilarious scene, which we won't spoil — that her boyfriend is cheating on her. Obviously, her next step is to move in with a group of bros — womanizing Schmidt (Max Greenfield), personal training guru Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.), and touchy Nick (Jake Johnson) — she found through the internet.

A lot of the episode's humor revolves around the guys just not understanding Jess and her crazy female ways. Yes, you've heard that before, but while a few of the jokes are stale, the show gets new mileage out of this age-old concept by making sure each of the guys doesn't understand her for specific, character-driven reasons. Plus, Jess is legitimately pretty odd, so you can see where they're coming from.

The pilot is pretty straightforward, but the cast shows a lot of potential. While Jess could easily have came off as a contrived hot-hipster-weirdo, Zooey manages to make her quirks seem genuine, and she knocks several scenes of physical comedy out of the park. The guys have an easy chemistry that makes their friendship super believable, and we're looking forward to seeing Jess integrate into the group. It's sure to bring a lot of laughs.

Want to check New Girl out? You can download the pilot for free on iTunes until Monday, September 19, or watch it live, Tuesday, September 20 at 9/8c on FOX.
