Chevy Chase’s long, rocky run with Community will finally come to an end this season.
Deadline reports that Chevy — as part of a mutual agreement with the show — will end his three-and-a-half year relationship with Community immediately, finally laying the character of Pierce Hawthorne to rest.
The news won’t exactly come as a shock to fans of the show. Chevy has never been afraid to express his discontent with both Community and his character, whom he felt was bigoted and racist.
Speaking to the Huffington Post UK last fall about the show, Chevy said, “It was a big mistake! I just sort of hung around because I have three daughters and a wife, and I figured out I might as well make some bread, every week, so I can take care of them in the way they want... The hours are hideous, and it’s still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television.”
The actor’s departure from the show is effective immediately, but since most of the episodes have been filmed, Pierce Hawthorne will still be appearing at Greendale Community College at least a few times this season.
