This week’s episode of Criminal Minds, “Zugzwang,” ended with a shocking twist: the apparent murder of Reid’s (Matthew Gray Gubler) mysterious girlfriend, Maeve (Beth Riesgraf), at the hands of Michelle Trachtenberg’s Diane.
Refusing to believe our eyes, we thought, “The show’s writers can’t be that cruel, right? Right?”
According to TVLine, they can, because Reid’s soulmate isn’t coming back from the dead.
“We pitched a story where we’d introduce a unique love interest for Dr. Reid and it would end in tragedy,” showrunner Erica Messer tells the site. “Matthew [Gray Gubler] agreed the only way to tell this story was if she died in the saddest way possible.”
Death by psycho-stalker — and in front of the beau you’d never met face-to-face — certainly qualifies as super sad. Messer adds that the traumatic event will tee Reid up for an emotional Season 8, explaining, “[Reid’s reaction] is the arc for [his] character for the rest of the season.”
