A lot of bourbon has been shared between Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) and Patty Hewes (Glenn Close) on Damages, and the two will meet again for the fifth and final season starting July 11 on DirecTV’s Audience Network. In a recent interview with TVLine, Rose Byrne teased her character’s last arc — but wouldn’t confirm if Ellen is really dead, as the preview seems to indicate.
“I’m pleading the fifth on this,” said Rose when TVLine tried to ascertain if Ellen really meets her end this season. Nonetheless, she did say, “There are some big things, absolutely. There were a few frantic phone calls to the writers, ‘What’s happening?! Really?! This is really happening?!’”
After piquing our dread/excitement, Rose promised an epic showdown between Ellen and Patty — in the courtroom. “I think it’s a very satisfying thing for the fans to see. Early on we always talked about, ‘Wouldn’t it be great down the line to see them go up against each other over a case?’ It’s like the ultimate ending. It all comes full circle. The protégé becomes the opponent.”
Rose told The Huffington Post more about how the two will finally meet as lawyers. “For fans of the show, I think it's a very satisfying experience to watch this unfold,” said Rose. “There's no better opponent than Ellen for Patty because Ellen was taught by her, knows her best tricks and her moves before Patty does. It's really more what Ellen is willing to do, whether she's willing to go as far as Patty does.”
Finally, Rose assured TVLine the show’s ending would leave viewers satisfied. We’re taking that to mean Ellen survives, because the alternative would be very unsatisfactory indeed.
