Dexter always ends with a death, and Season 7 was no exception to the serial slayer rule.

It you have not yet watched “Surprise, Motherf—er!,” do yourself a major favor and move along to something else. Spoilers ahead!

Tonight, at the very end of the Season 7 finale, Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) is faced with a massive, game-changing decision: Kill Dexter (Michael C. Hall) or kill LaGuerta (Lauren Vélez).

All season long LaGuerta has been homing in on Dexter’s true identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher, and it comes to a head when she arrests him early in the episode. Instead of fleeing the country after his release, Dexter opts to stand his ground, setting his boss-lady up by drawing her to a crime scene she’s anticipated Dexter’s killing of Hector Estrada, the man who butchered his mother.

Deb catches wind of what’s about to happen, and with every intention of staunching the bloodshed, she races to the crime-to-be-done scene. At the site of the inevitable collision course, she’s faced with a simple yet completely morally ambiguous decision: adopted brother or boss/rival/friend.

Deb chooses LaGuerta but not in a good-for-LaGuerta way. Deb kills the department’s most level-headed lady with a bullet to the chest, mere seconds after LaGuerta tells Deb that she’s a good person. And seconds after Dexter tells Deb that it’s OK if she chooses to shoot him instead.

In an episode post-mortem, showrunner Scott Buck explains, “It forever bonds [Dexter and Deb] together in tragedy. It takes them to a place they’ve never been before.” Scott adds that the moment when a massively guilty Deb runs to LaGuerta’s dead body hadn’t been scripted.

Going into the episode we knew something crazy would go down, given that several loose ends had been left undone. Do you approve of how they’ve been tied up, or are you upset with the direction Season 7 veered off in?

As a side note, what do you think escaped prisoner Hannah (Yvonne Strahovski) will be up to in Season 8?
