It's sad, and yet irresistibly good drama, to picture America's Sweetheart Reese Witherspoon pulling the do you know who I am card while she and her husband, Jim Toth, were arrested Friday morning.

Reese supposedly told the police officer, "Do you know my name?" and "You're about to find out who I am." It sounded diva-ish. It made for a great story. But is it true?

"It wasn't like that," a source told E! News, explaining that when the officer was handcuffing Reese, the actress just asked, "Do you know my name?" as in "Don't you need to know my name?" This source also said Reese didn't yell or get into any kind of physical altercation with the officer. "She was being protective of her husband and was fearful of the situation."

In her post-arrest statement, Reese said, "Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now. But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."

So it's not like she's denying she drank too much and wasn't on her best behavior. She's admitting she said stuff she regrets. But that doesn't mean she necessarily played the do you know who I am card the way it's come across in print, out of context.

Do you think this source is just doing damage control, or is the truth somewhere in between the police report and this source's explanation?
