Australian DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian have been wracked with guilt following the suicide of King Edward VII Hospital nurse Jacintha Saldanha.
The tragedy occurred on December 7, a few days after the Aussie DJs made a prank call to the hospital pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles and asking for information on Kate Middleton’s health. Jacintha answered the call and patched it through to another nurse, who divulged Kate’s medical information.
The DJs aired the conversation, in a state of disbelief that their call had actually gotten through, and the story made headlines all over the world.
Only a couple of days later, Jacintha was found unconscious at an address in central London in what appeared to be a suicide.
“The first thing I asked was, ‘Was she a mother?’” Mel said in an interview with Clare Brady of Today Tonight following the ordeal. “If we played any involvement in her death then we’re very sorry for that. We couldn’t foresee what was going to happen in the future.”
“It was the worst phone call I have ever had in my life,” he added. “There’s not a minute that goes by that we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through. And the thought we may have played a part in that is gut wrenching.”
The two DJs have been in hiding since news broke of Jacintha’s alleged suicide on December 6.
“We are so sorry that this has happened to them,” Mel said through tears, regarding Jacintha’s family. “No one could have predicted this result... I’m just so devastated. I’m really feeling for them.”
