When it comes to Anne Hathaway and her role in the the upcoming film version of the musical Les Misérables, one word comes to mind: dedication.
Having just gotten in crazy-good shape for The Dark Knight Rises, Anne did a 180 and dropped 25 pounds from her already slim frame to play Fantine, a tubercular prostitute. After shedding an initial 10 pounds, she then lost 15 additional pounds in two weeks by subsisting on two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day.
“I had to be obsessive about it — the idea was to look near death,” Anne explained to Vogue. “Looking back on the whole experience — and I don’t judge it in any way — it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway.”
So it should come as no surprise that Anne also sings in the movie. To prepare, she trained with voice coach Joan Lader, who has worked with the likes of Patti LuPone, Madonna, and Anne’s Les Miz co-star Hugh Jackman. On top of that, Anne said that she made a point of “singing all the time because I knew I’d be singing 12 hours a day on set, and I wanted to be ready — not that it takes much to get me singing.”
That certainly doesn’t come as a surprise. Watch her belt out an amusing parody of “On My Own” during the 2011 Oscars:
While we’re not dying to see Anne looking all emaciated, we can’t wait to hear her version of the famous “I Dreamed a Dream.”
