The Emmy race for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series has shaped up to be pretty tough this year; the category has a wild mix of veteran funny ladies and worthy first-time nominees.

Modern Family star Julie Bowen took home the trophy in 2011, and is nominated again in 2012, along with co-star Sofia Vergara, but we think this year’s prize belongs to someone outside the Dunphy-Pritchett clan.

While Mayim Bialik (Blossom The Big Bang Theory), Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie), and the late Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives) put forth a trio of impressively hilarious performances, Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) is truly the most deserving of the Emmy this year.

Let’s take a moment to review why Kristen should take home the gold:

Her Versatility: Unlike the other women in this category, Kristen’s nom encompasses a variety of roles that most actresses only dream of getting the chance to tackle. From Kris Jenner to Lana Del Ray, her dead-on impersonations of the entertainment world’s most-recognized stars are a big part of what makes her so fun to watch. Even Kris agreed!

Even her original characters, like the Target Lady and one of the Two A-holes, prove that Wiig is one of the most underrated actresses in recent memory. We’ll never look at Target the same way again.

Throw in that even her SNL characters who didn’t make the cut are still pretty hilarious, and we find it hard to believe that Kristen will be overlooked come September 23.

It May Be Her Last Chance: After nearly seven seasons on SNL, Kristen took her final bow on the Studio 8H stage last May, and if her castmates’ tears were any indication, no one was thrilled to see her go. Kristen has been nominated in this category four years in a row, but has yet to take home the award.

Here’s hoping that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences agrees that it’s finally time to honor Wiig for the breath of fresh air she has brought to an otherwise forgettable few seasons of SNL. It’s now or never, guys!

Always a Bridesmaid: Kristen's first starring movie role in last summer’s Bridesmaids (which she also co-wrote with Annie Mumolo) may have endeared her to fans and nabbed a myriad of award nominations (including an Oscar nom for Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Mumolo and Wiig and a Best Supporting Actress nod for co-star Melissa McCarthy), but, like the Emmys, Wiig walked away empty-handed.

We hate to point out the obvious, but it seems like Wiig is always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Hopefully, this year she’ll get to walk down the aisle.
