Easy access to guns, not easy access to violent films, is to blame for horrifying shootings like the one that took place in Aurora, Colorado, on Friday, says Kim Ledger, whose son, Heath Ledger, played the role of The Joker in the Batman franchise’s second movie, The Dark Knight.
“It’s terrible — the whole circumstances,” Heath’s father Australia’s Herald Sun. “The guy’s obviously a nut case. He has obviously lost it. I think what America should be doing is restricting the availability of ammunition or revisiting their gun laws — that’s what they should be doing.”
Kim’s comments follow Friday morning’s massacre in which a gunman killed 12 people at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises and injured over 50 more. Reportedly dressed up with red hair, the shooter told police after his arrest that he was the Joker.
But for Heath’s father, his late son and the character he played can’t be blamed for the tragedy that unfolded over the weekend.
“We can’t blame Heath or the character,” he said. “It’s fictitious. I don’t know what this does to the character. I think that’s the least of my worries. I’d be more worried about the families and other people involved in this tragedy.”
