While no character on Game of Thrones has it easy-breezy, young Sansa Stark is in a particularly nasty predicament. The silver lining to her dark cloud is that she’s no longer engaged to psychopathic Joffrey, but the cloud is still real dark because she’s now the cruel teen’s captive.
With the show’s third season in progress, we caught up with star Sophie Turner at The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Presents an Evening With Game of Thrones on March 19. “[Sansa] has really big highs and she has really big lows,” reveals the 17-year-old actress who plays her. “Her situation in the long term is going to get better.”
On that optimistic note, Sophie adds that her character hasn’t lost hope, which means she probably won’t remain within Joffrey’s torture-happy clutches forever.
Wetpaint Entertainment: There's a brief moment last season where there's relief for Sansa, and it was very short lived?
Sophie Turner: It was crushed by Littlefinger, yeah.
What now? Well, the fact that she kind of was a prisoner of Joffrey's, but she was going to become queen, and that was kind of her means of escape. She was going to become queen and then be reunited with her family because she had the power to do so. And then she is now just a prisoner of Joffrey's with no way to escape or anything. That's what she wants to do this season. She's trying to escape.
Is he still as passionate about torturing her now that he's preoccupied with new fiancée Margaery?
I mean, Margaery is definitely good at turning out as a kind of defense for Sansa because in the books, Joffrey seems to really like Margaery. So we'll see if it's the same on screen. I don't know. We'll see. Maybe Sansa just gets beat up again. I don't know.
Is there anything you can say about whether her situation is going to get better?
Her situation in the long term is going to get better, I think. I hope, and that's what I'm going to say. I'm a very ambiguous person. If you spend time with me, you'd learn this.
If you had to tease her overall arc?
I'd say it's very much kind of an up and down season for Sansa. She has really big highs and she has really big lows.
Does she have any hope at this point?
She still has a little bit of hope, I think, but that's because it's kind of teased to her the fact that she could maybe marry the man of her dreams. For instance Season 1, she thinks Joffrey's the man of her dreams, and then that's crushed. I think she still has that little bit of hope, yeah.
Game of Thrones Season 3 airs Sundays at 9/8c on HBO.
