Before the 54th Grammy Awards, several pre-show awards were being handed out, including Best Alternative Music Album, which went to folk-y band Bon Iver. Their eponymous record beat out others by Death Cab for Cutie, Foster the People, My Morning Jacket, and Radiohead.

In a recent interview with Billboard, frontman Justin Vernon said the band had been invited to perform at the awards show. “We kind of said ‘f**k you’ a little bit, and they sort of acted like they wanted us to play, but I don’t think they wanted us to play,” said Vernon. Bon Iver is up for three other awards — some of the biggest of the night, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Considering indie darlings Arcade Fire won for Record of the Year last year, we’ll assume these are accolades Bon Iver won’t be saying “eff you” to.

UPDATE: Justin Vernon nervously accepted the award for best new artist, thanking his fans, his label for "transparency and friendship," and his parents.
