Wednesday night at the Television Critics Association convention in Pasadena, a group of TV’s top writers and producers gathered for a meeting with the press. Wetpaint Entertainment pulled Hart of Dixie creator Leila Gerstein aside, to get the scoop on what’s coming up later this season.
Wetpaint Entertainment: What about Zoe is like you? You’re a New Yorker originally, too.
Leila Gerstein: That’s a good question. I didn’t know you were just going to go right into the psychological stuff. Well, Zoe is a lot like me. I think we have a similar sense of humor. We have similar neuroses. I would say that Zoe Hart is a little bit more like me than she is like Rachel Bilson, who is not neurotic, and is actually a pretty well-balanced person, and has not had all the problems. Like Zoe Hart has a lot of difficulty with relationships and men. I’m happily married, but in my past, that was me a little bit.
How far into the season are you?
We are near the finish line. We are working on Episode 20 right now. We are shooting 17.
What can you tell us is coming up?
Stuff is happening in the back nine episodes. The Secret is exploding. We are looking down the gun of when it is all coming out to everyone. This past of Lemon and Lavon.
Have there been hints about The Secret in past episodes we may not have picked up on? Should we go back and re-watch?
I don’t think so. But yeah, you should re-watch EVERYTHING — just because it’s brilliant! But secrets are coming out, things are exploding, the triangles are all heating up.
All the triangles: Wade-George-Zoe, Zoe-George-Lemon, and Lemon-Lavon-George. Everything is heating up and is going to come to a crescendo.
In any particular episode number? Which episode in particular can we not afford to miss?
I would say the really, really big explosions are all coming out around Episode 16, 17, and 18.
So, we don’t have to wait until the very end of the season?
Things are happening, and new things are happening as well.
Does Zoe make choices between the guys?
I can’t say that. I won’t say that. Choices will be made for people. We will continue to vacillate between Team Wade and Team George, I think.
Through the end of the season?
The pendulum will shift from one to the other, and you will see when it happens.
In the season finale, what will we be left to wonder over the summer?
You’ll be left to worry about EVERYTHING.
Come on, Leila — give us SOMETHING!
I think the interesting thing is, we’re not going to be sure what to root for. And I think that’s going to be an interesting thing that plays out.
Is there any chance that Zoe won’t stay, that she’ll just go back to New York?
Totally — and then Season 2, the show will be shot in Manhattan.
You’re so making that up.
Have you gotten your pickup yet for Season 2? Do you know when that will come?
No — but when you find out, will you tell me?
