When Honey Boo Boo’s older sister Anna “Chickadee” Shannon gave birth to a baby girl this summer, Mama June Shannon came under fire for allegedly making fun of her granddaughter, who was born with an extra thumb on her right hand.

June insisted the story was false, telling People the family has “embraced” baby Kaitlyn’s abnormality. “It makes Kaitlyn more special to us," June said.

Now, in a new interview with RadarOnline, June reveals that there are no plans to remove the thumb anytime soon.

“The doctor doesn’t want to do anything right now because they don’t know the full function of the other thumb or if they’re both connected,” she explains, citing fears of possible paralysis of the other fingers on Kaitlyn’s hand.

That’s not to say the Thompsons won’t consider an operation sometime down the line, but they say “it will be awhile before we go back to the surgeon.”

The Season 1 finale of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo — which will largely focus on the birth of baby Kaitlyn — airs on Wednesday, September 26 at 10/9c on TLC.
