Here’s a bit of math: The Hunger Games movie cost $90 million to make and raked in $214 million in its first five days in theaters. With all that profit, the stars stand make some bonus cash on top of their starting salary. Just how much did Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) get paid to appear in what shaped up to be one of the biggest movies of the year?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, J.Law banked $500,000 for the role — a huge step up from her Winter’s Bone salary, which was around $3,000 a week. The payday is nothing to scoff at, and Lawrence and her co-stars Liam Hemsworth (Gale) and Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) could get another $500,000 in “escalators,” or extra cash the studio shells out when a movie surpasses certain box offices numbers. Because The Hunger Games gets compared to Twilight in every other way, we’ll tell you Kristen Stewart ended up with $2 million after the first movie in the vampire franchise.
As long as Jennifer signs up for the sequels, she can probably expect to become a millionaire many times over. Vulture reports that Stewart made at least $25 million for the final Twilight movies.
Even though some people have problems with Jennifer as the trilogy’s badass heroine, we think she’s definitely worth a little more moolah the second time around. It appears the studio agrees: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer is negotiating a deal "in the $10 million range." Ka-ching!
