The future of CBS's hit sitcom How I Met Your Mother is uncertain.
The show is definitely coming back for its eighth season this fall, but whether or not it gets a Season 9 is still up in the air. It's not an unlikely proposition — HIMYM may be past its creative prime, but it pulled in its best ratings ever during Season 7. However, a recent quote from Jason Segel (Marshall Eriksen) suggests that if the show does go on, it will have to do so without one of its biggest stars.
In an interview with Austria's Kurier, Jason reportedly said of his new movie ventures, "It's great to do some 'rated R' stuff again, because I've been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now. That's why I'm gonna quit How I Met Your Mother after the eighth season."
Before you start sobbing into your Erikson-sized hankies over the idea of a Marshal-less How I Met Your Mother, take a second to breathe. Jason's rep told E! that Jason's statement isn't exactly what it seems.
"Perhaps something got lost in translation, but season nine hasn't even been addressed yet," the rep explained.
That said, Jason's movie career is taking off. He captured the world's attention in 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and in the last few years he's been in a number of well received films, including The Muppets and The Five Year Engagement, both of which he also wrote.
Despite what his rep said, an insider told E! that Jason is chomping at the bit to get off of How I Met Your Mother. Apparently, he's not the only one: the source claims Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin) is also unlikely to want to come back for a Season 9. The source says it would take "a lot of money" to get the stars to stay.
Of course, since Jason and Alyson play the married-with-a-kid couple on the show, it wouldn't be hard to write their characters off. Their plotlines in Season 7 often felt disconnected from the rest of the cast anyway.
