Andie MacDowell and Erica Dasher, the stars of ABC Family's new Jane by Design, say that their show is NOT Devil Wears Prada redux. The actresses know that the premise of the show — a high school student (Erica), masquerading as someone older, lands a job working for a demanding fashion exec (Andie) — bears some resemblance to the hit book and movie about an Anna Wintour-like editor and her assistant, but... maybe not so much? At a panel today at the Television Critics Association gathering in Pasadena, Erica said that she loves the film, starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, and has seen it more than once, but she thinks the show takes a portrait of the fashion world to another level. "What's fun about the show is that you can delve even deeper into that world," she explained.

"There are slight similarities" to Devil, admits Andie, "but it's not really the same thing." Even though her character is pretty intense? "I started off as a model," says Andie, "and I have worked with a lot of strong powerful women, but I don't see the character as mean. I just think she's very stressed out. She is under an enormous amount of pressure." On the same panel, however, Andie said she "never knew it would be so much fun to be a mean, horrible person." Hmm...

New York fashion types will notice lots of cameo appearances on Jane by Design by familiar faces, including Stefano Tonchi of W magazine, designer Betsey Johnson, model Paulina Porizkova, Sex and the City costumer Patricia Field, and Lucky editor Brandon Holley.
