Jersey Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano has quietly scored another hit with her 495 Productions company. The second season of Repo Games premieres tonight (March 28 at 11 p.m. ET/PT on Spike), and, in an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, she shared her thoughts on why the show has connected so well with viewers, and how her show is completely different from any other debt-themed show on the air.

And make sure to check out Part 1 of our exclusive interview with SallyAnn, in which she discusses Jersey Shore Season 6.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Why do you think debt is such a timely topic at the moment?
SallyAnn Salsano: Everybody’s got debt right now. That’s the thing, I think the show’s so relatable right now. It’s almost crazy. Every single person is dealing with this, and if they’re not, they know somebody who is. Every single person knows somebody who is having trouble paying a bill.

Do you think Repo Games appeals particularly to young people?
I think it’s true across the board. I’m telling you, we’re getting more people who are in their 30s, 40s, and 50s than ever before. Straight across to retirement [age]. It’s just what’s going on right now in the country.
How do you choose the trivia questions that determine whether or not someone can keep their car?
We come up with a group of questions, and then we make it a game. Groups of five that are all well-rounded, so it just shows that you have general knowledge. [There can be] one on sports, one on food, one on politics, just to give a general sampling.

What were you looking for in the hosts, Tom DeTone and Josh Lewis?
Real repo guys. Those guys have not been game show hosts, never have been, and probably shouldn’t have been. And I think they’re doing such a good job. I just wanted real-life people because it is a repo show, and I wanted people that truly knew repo.

How is Repo Games different from other repo shows?
Ours is completely different because it’s more of a game show than it is a repo show. Everyone [on other shows] goes there to take people’s cars and see their reactions and with us, we go there to actually give them a chance. Believe it or not, we’re actually there to try and help them. At least now we give them a chance to keep their car, free and clear, not just for the month but paid off for good. For people in dire straits, that’s a big deal.

Does it get emotional?
The people that win back these cars are more excited than people that win new cars on The Price is Right. Sure if you already have a car and win a new car, that’s great. But if you have one car, even if it’s a piece of junk with no air conditioning, but someone’s going to take that away from you, it’s a big deal if you get to keep it.
