It’s nice to be a celebrity endorser of Weight Watchers, because you earn about 500 times more than the company’s ordinary endorsers: the leaders who run the meetings!

“We are professionals, we have to dress nice, but we are paid less than kids who work at McDonald’s,” one leader told The New York Times.

So while Jessica Simpson landed a reported $4 million to shill for the weight-loss company, its leaders earn as little as $7,600 per year.

“This is a multimillion-dollar company with enough cash to advertise relentlessly on TV, and pay celebrities tons of money to lose weight,” groused another leader.

University of Illinois at Chicago’s Sharon H. Mastracci, a women’s employment expert, posits that the issue might come down to gender.

“It’s a female-dominated job, it’s in the service industry, and it’s caring work,” she explained. “Caring work is undervalued, and they’re taking for granted that you care so much you’re going to be there no matter what.”

Long story short: Jessica Simpson and Jennifer Hudson should consider themselves very, very lucky.
