Say what you need to say about John Mayer, but at least he's still able to surprise. Nowadays, most celebs are lashing out at the paparazzi and 24/7 news cycle for invading their privacy and judging their appearance. Not John. Not anymore, anyway.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, John was asked about his latest famous girlfriend, Katy Perry, and how it must be hard to live a private life when you're both so famous. "It makes it hard to live a life where people don't know who you are, but I haven't had any trouble in my private life at all," he said. "The only trouble I've had is maybe people geo-tagging me, but that's about it. To me it's just a matter of people knowing where you are on a given day, and I guess assessing your style when there is no style to be assessed. I don't really call that infringing on a personal life. That's just where I am, when. That's all."

The reporter followed-up by asking how the relationship with Katy has been for him. "It's been ... I mean, I'm quite happy. I'm happy in all aspects of my life. I'm very happy in all aspects of my life."

Yeah, that's a little vague. But after that he continued with an argument that people are less concerned with celeb life now than they were a few years ago. Not sure we can agree on that, but here's John's take:

"And I also think that the way that the media plays a part in everyone's life has changed over the last several years. People are a lot less concerned in what's going on with other people. I think people are a lot less concerned with what's going on with the lives of celebrities, and celebrities are a little less concerned with what's going on with the lives of other people thinking about them all day [laughs]. ... On the outset of all this stuff in 2007 and 2008, everybody was thinking, 'Well, what does this mean for me? When somebody takes my picture and they put it up on the Internet the next day and they write stuff about me, what does this mean for me? What is this going to steal from me?' And I think time has shown that nothing will be stolen from you. It's just a photograph of you and your dumb scarf that you put on because it wouldn't fit in your suitcase. Cool. If you want to 'style police' my day off, that's fine."

Of course, there's also the rumor mill that follows John and Katy, as well as every other high-profile celeb (like his ex, Taylor Swift, who may or may not have written "I Knew You Were Trouble" about him.) Maybe he doesn't pay attention to that kind of thing. Then again, maybe he was vague about Katy because their relationship is open and non-traditional, which would explain all the flirting she did with that Muse drummer.
