During AMC's fascinating Inside the Episode feature about Mad Men  Season 5, Episode 13: "The Phantom," show creator Matthew Weiner offers an explanation about what was going on with Don and Megan during the end of the episode, and it might not be what you think.

According to Jon Hamm, Don changes his mind about putting Megan in the commercial because he realizes "we'd be doing them a favor by putting her in, she's the right person. Don realizes that Megan has a talent … Realizing that means that he has to let her go, and let her find that way."

Matthew Weiner takes this further. "[Don] knows that if he gives Megan what she wants, she could possibly leave him," he explains. "I think it's almost a story of sacrifice. That he sees her on that film and falls in love with her again, and realizes that he has to do this. And then we see her on the set, and we realize that she's gone."

Matthew adds that he sees "success, and what are the perils of success" as the themes of the season. So this is, presumably, supposed to be a moment of big success for Megan.

Here's the question: Does he mean that Megan is literally gone? Are we going to begin next season with the end of Megan and Don's marriage? Is Don going to cheat because he realizes Megan is off to do bigger and better things?

And, most importantly: Is this how you read that scene? Until this explanation, we weren't actually sure what Don was supposed to have seen in the tapes. Do you agree that Megan is a big talent that he has just given a boost to?
