Mindy Kaling’s new FOX comedy may be named after its star and showrunner, but The Mindy Project isn’t a sitcom about real-life Mindy Kaling.

“The character is very wild and she’s very confident which is really fun to play,” Mindy revealed at the New FOX Tuesday Screening Event on August 26. “I would say she wants to lose weight and is hard on herself in some ways, but also thinks she’s going to marry Chris Evans. [...] I don’t have that crazy, ill-advised confidence that she has.”

“But there are some things we do have in common, like I think we’re both a little abrupt, I think we’re both a little un-PC, she’s that to a bigger degree than me,” she added. “I definitely never drank the way that this character parties. [...] I’m a lot more square than her.”

But Mindy isn’t the show’s only draw: There are some equally hilarious guest stars lined up. “Bill Hader and Ed Helms are coming up, whom I love.” Yes, an Office mini-reunion! “[I]t’s great because [Ed is] playing a normal, handsome guy. Andy is such a weirdo, so it was fun to write a part like that for him.”

Much like The Office, The Mindy Project is a workplace comedy. “There will still be a lot of dating, but it’s really opening up the workplace a lot.” But in this case, the “workplace” is an upscale Manhattan doctor’s office, not the Scranton branch of a paper company.

Mindy's movin' on up!

The Mindy Project kicks off Tuesday, September 25 at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.
