This article contains spoilers for the New Girl Season 1 finale.
New Girl Season 1 came to a heartfelt and hilarious close last night with Season 1, Episode 24: "See Ya." Nick (Jake Johnson) moved out (boo), the gang got lost in the desert (like you do), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece (Hannah Simone) broke up in a scene that was surprisingly and painfully realistic, and then Nick moved back in (yay!). We couldn't have asked for a better cap to the show's refreshingly delightful freshman season; the final scene, with the roommates rocking out to AC/DC, sent us into summer with big smiles on our faces.
However, one thing that didn't happen was any sort of romantic progress between Nick and Jess (Zooey Deschanel). The pair made strides forward in their friendship when Jess admitted how important meeting Nick has been for her, but, despite some crazy sexual tension, the pair kept it platonic. Heck, Schmidt got further with Nick than Jess did, thanks to an unexpected kiss goodbye (a great bit of physical humor, by the way).
We can't decide how we feel about this non-development. On one hand, we've been Nick/Jess 'shippers since almost day one, and we'd love to see the show explore that relationship. And we'd rather not see the "will they-won't they" tension dragged out season after season until we get sick of it. On the other hand, we like the slow-but-steady deepening of their friendship, and, so far, the 'ship teasing hasn't crossed the line into obnoxious territory.
It might be better for this relationship to develop slowly, instead of getting together and then, inevitably, breaking up, just to repeat the cycle again.
