This morning, NFL linebacker Jovan Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, who gave birth to their child three months ago. Then, the football star shot himself, say police.
The 25-year-old Kansas City Chiefs linebacker was apparently arguing with his 22-year-old girlfriend at around 7 a.m. on the morning of December 1 in the Kansas City area. Police say he shot her multiple times, and she was pronounced dead at the hospital. The girlfriend's mother reportedly witnessed the shooting.
After killing his girlfriend, Jovan left the scene and drove to the stadium where the Chiefs play. There, he spoke to team personnel, including the team's coach, who tried to keep Jovan from causing further harm. Just as police got there, they heard a gunshot and realized that Jovan had shot himself in the head.
"He was the last person in the world you would expect," says Jovan's agent, Joe Linta. "Completely out of character. He was charitable, polite, articulate — and something went crazy wrong."
Jovan played football for the University of Maine and has been with the Chiefs for four years.
Our thoughts go out to the couple's child and to the families that were affected.
