What do you do when you’ve just made history by becoming the first sitting President to endorse gay marriage? Oh, go hang out with George Clooney? Cool, that’s probably what we’d do, too.
Shortly after putting his public support behind the gay marriage movement, President Obama took advantage of his newly energized liberal base to hit them up for money. George Clooney hosted a star-studded reelection fundraiser at his home, which raised almost $15 million, according to Deadline. At the event, Obama said, “Obviously yesterday we made some news. [Applause] But the truth is it was a logical extension of what America is supposed to be. It grew directly out of this difference in visions. Are we a country that includes everybody and gives everybody a shot and treats everybody fairly, and is that going to make us stronger? Are we welcoming to immigrants? Are we welcoming to people who aren’t like us, does that make us stronger? I believe it does. So that’s what’s at stake.”
Stars like Tobey Maguire and Robert Downey Jr. paid $40,000 a head to support Obama, who wasn’t above teasing his handsome host. Of his famous Shepard Fairey "Hope" poster, Obama said, “People don’t realize that the photograph of me is actually me sitting next to George. And this is the first time that George Clooney has actually been photo-shopped out of a picture.”
He also challenged Clooney to a pick-up game. “I want to thank Clooney for letting us use his basketball court. This man has been talking smack about his basketball game ever since I’ve known him.”
Forget the dinner. We’d pay $40K to watch that one-on-one match.
Other famous guests included George's girlfriend Stacy Kiebler, Barry Diller, Diane Von Furstenberg, Trina Turk, Barbra Streisand, James Brolin, Billy Crystal, Jack Black, Salma Hayek, Antonio Villaraigosa, and Howard Berman.
