A tearful Octavia Spencer became a first-time Oscar winner at the 84th Annual Academy Awards on February 26, 2012. The Help star received a standing ovation as she accepted the trophy for Best Supporting Actress.

"Thank you, Academy, for putting me with the hottest guy in the room," she said, referring to her Oscar, not Christian Bale, who had presented her with the award.

Spencer went on to thank her family, the state of Alabama, and Steven Spielberg "for changing my life."

Other early awards went to A Separation from Iran for Best Foreign Language Film, and Hugo for Best Cinematography and Art Direction. The Iron Lady won for Best Makeup.
