Universal has announced that it is starting work on a Pitch Perfect sequel, according to Entertainment Weekly.
So how soon can we expect the sequel? Well, you shouldn't hold your breath, as the studio plans to release the film in 2015. Still, that's better than never, right?
Pitch Perfect was released last fall and starred Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson, Brittany Snow and Skylar Astin. It earned $112 million worldwide and was made for only $17 million.
It is currently Universal's third highest-grossing on-demand title ever, behind Ted and Bridesmaids.
The screenwriter for the first film, Kay Cannon, has been hired to write the new one.
It has yet to be announced which cast members will return, but given the film's reunion at last weekend's MTV Movie Awards — which included everyone but Anna Kendrick — it would seem to be likely that at least most of the major cast members will return.
At the time of Pitch Perfect's release, we loved it — although we couldn't help but feel it was perhaps a bit too similar to Glee. Still, we wonder if this movie getting a sequel bodes well for Glee's chances of getting a fifth season, which still has yet to be announced.
And we have a feeling that this sequel could be even more popular than the first, given that Rebel Wilson and Skylar Astin's stars continue to rise, following their appearances in Pain and Gain and 21 and Over, resptectively.
