The Real Housewives of New York's supersized Season 5 premiere (Season 5, Episode 1: “A New New York”) introduced us to an almost entirely new cast. But never fear: the Housewives, new and old, jumped right into the drama, with catty fights over dinner and a big accusation from LuAnn. Unfortunately, some former RHoNY fans didn't tune in to see it all go down.
The premiere drew 1.7 million viewers — down from the 1.9 for Season 4, and 2 million back in Season 3. Did people decide not to watch because of the loss of Jill Zarin and Alex McCord?
It's possible. However, a Bravo insider told the Huffington Post that Bravo "didn’t expect the numbers to be huge," noting that "Monday is a new night for the show and it’s the most competitive night of the week." The show was "up over 90 percent" from Bravo's programming for the prior four Mondays, so it's doing something right.
The real test for the new Housewives will be the ratings for the next few weeks. Will their personalities create positive buzz? Will fans decide they're boring and tune out? Only time will tell.
