Scandal may be a show about Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington), the crisis management expert who “fixes” delicate situations in Washington DC, but without her newest employee Quinn Perkins asking all the right questions, we would be as confused as the rookie appears to be while making coffee runs.

Well, expect Quinn to fetch less coffee and do more agency-appropriate work after tonight (April 19) , as we learn something about her character on the show’s third episode.

At a panel honoring the show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, we caught up with newcomer Katie Lowes about what’s to come.

Wetpaint Entertainment: There seems to be a romance brewing between Quinn and the cute, rookie reporter, Gideon. What can you tell us about that?
Katie: Hottie boy. I love him. He’s such a great actor, Brendan Hines. He’s lovely, and when we went to the first table read for the second episode, he walked in and Shonda was like get to know that guy. He’s your love interest, and I was like, “What?!” She was like, “Get to know that guy, he’s your love interest.” And I’m like, phew, he’s cute, A. And B, he’s totally nice, and C, he’s ridiculously talented. So that worked out. It’s a really tricky story line because Quinn is doing the right thing by getting close to this guy and getting information for her boss, but at the same time, he’s super cute. She totally wants to date him. So it’s like, what do you do? That also happens in real life to a lot of people. So that’s the world. It’s tricky though, tricky gray lines.

Is Gideon someone we’re going to see past episode three?
Yes.

And tonight we also discover that Quinn Perkins has a secret?
Yeah, she does. (Smiles)

How soon are we going to delve into what it is?
Well, let’s just say, everybody on the show sort of has a secret, and everybody has a back story that is completely different than what you see in the first episode. From episode one to episode seven, nothing is what you think it is, basically with everybody. Shonda Rhimes creates these unbelievably complex and contradictory people, which is very similar to real people. I mean you’ll see one side of Quinn and think you have somebody completely figured out. And then an episode later, no, you don’t.

Do you think she was hired, maybe, because she has a questionable past?
You could say something like that. I think that when we get season two, you will find out why Olivia hired Quinn Perkins, and it’s for very specific reasons.
