A beloved soap star has sadly passed away.

Jeanne Cooper, who starred on The Young and the Restless for more than 40 years, died on May 8 at age 84.

She became ill due to an infection earlier this year while promoting the show's 40th anniversary.

Jeanne's son, L.A. Law actor Corbin Bernsen, took to Facebook to make the announcement.

"My mother passed away this morning just a short time ago, peaceful with my sister by her side, in her sleep," Corbin writes. "I was going to visit this afternoon, thought I had time. Reminder to self  time is a precious thing."

"I, too, am at peace, however," he continues. "I said my goodbyes several times over during the last few weeks. I'll go one last time now for a gentle kiss, a final farewell for this lifetime."

Jeanne  who has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame  received ten Daytime Emmy nominations over the years for playing Katherine Chancellor on The Young and the Restless. Her tenure on the show spanned from 1973 to 2013.

She also earned two Primetime Emmy nominations for other TV roles.

Jeanne was married to TV producer Harry Bernsen, Jr. for 23 years before the two divorced, and they had three children, all of whom are actors.

Our thoughts are with Jeanne's family during this difficult time.
