Going back to school after a couple months of sunshiny freedom is never easy to do. Still, the excitement of back-to-school shopping is more than enough of a reason to enjoy the process. It seems like the end of every summer gives us another chance to completely reinvent ourselves -- without all the pesky resolutions that New Year’s Day -- as whatever persona we choose, whether it’s uptown girl à la Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) or an edgier Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz) type. At the end of the day though, the best character to embody is our own, so when we saw this cool video showing DIY queen Erica Domesek designing her own canvas purse with Sharpie pens, we were, well, inspired.

We’re loving the concept of personalizing some of the new merchandise coming our way this back-to-school season. A good DIY project usually requires more creativity than cash, and best of all, the possibilities are endless. So we dug up a few simple pieces that would be perfect for personalization -- and all it takes is a handful of Sharpies to make your mark!

Sechuna Chess Check Backpack, $45

  • Going for a certain color palette this season? Everyone knows that black goes with everything, so find a Sharpie in your favorite hue and fill in the white squares on this backpack to make it match all your favorite pieces!
  • Can’t settle on just one color? Throw caution to the wind and use a handful of colors for an especially festive knapsack.

Topshop Roll-Sleeve Flecked Tee, $30

  • With a plain white tee, the possibilities are absolutely endless. Scrawl your favorite quote down the front or back of it, place a tiny signature in a conspicuous spot for a quirky take on the logo tee, or do your best Picasso with a full-on Sharpie portrait!

Hello Kitty Bow Backpack, $45

  • This one’s for the artists in the house: envision your ideal back-to-school outfit, flesh out Hello Kitty’s figure on this backpack, and draw it onto her for an incredible, one-of-a-kind book tote!

Newbark Seville Canvas Flats, $84

  • Take a cue from the very chic (but very expensive!) Stubbs & Wootton slippers and ink an emblem onto these flats -- perhaps your very own coat of arms?
  • Use the seam as your guide and fill in one color on each side of it to create a sweet pair of two-tone kicks.

Converse All Star Canvas Hi-Top Trainers, $52

  • These classic sneaks look great on their own, but have endless potential given a fantastic DIY makeover. For starters, choose your favorite print and try etching it onto your blank Converse canvas.
  • Get a group of friends to leave Sharpie signatures on your sneakers in multiple colors or all in black to create a pair of shoes that will reflect a ton of school-year memories.
