If you don’t subscribe to Kirk Cameron’s particular brand of Christianity, you may not know that the former Growing Pains star has his own ministry, The Way of the Master. The born-again actor flew low on the radar until March 2, when he appeared on Piers Morgan Tonight and ignited a firestorm of controversy with his comments about gay marriage.

First, Kirk said that marriage, an institution “almost as old as dirt,” shouldn’t be redefined. “So, do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't,” the erstwhile teen idol told Piers Morgan. The host pressed him on his beliefs about homosexuality. “I think that it’s unnatural. I think that it’s detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization,” responded Cameron.

Naturally, much of Hollywood had things to say about Mike Seaver’s viewpoints.

“I'll address kirk's comments as soon as I recover from rush limbaugh's,” tweeted Cameron’s former TV dad, Alan Thicke, referring to Rush Limbaugh’s recent radio show where he called a woman testifying about birth control a “slut.”

Though she didn’t name her on-screen sibling directly, Tracey Gold let the Twitterverse know, “I am a strong supporter of the #LGBT Community, and I believe in equal rights for all. #NOH8 #LOVE.”

Ex-Growing Pains actors weren’t the only ones upset by what Kirk had to say. Modern Family’s Jesse Tyler Ferguson tweeted, “The only unnatural thing about me being gay is that I had a crush on Kirk Cameron until about 24 hours ago.”

Talk show host Craig Ferguson echoed Alan Thicke when he said, “Rush makes me ashamed to be a middle-aged white man and Kirk Cameron makes me ashamed to be a failed actor. We don't all think like that NoH8,” on his Twitter page.

Kirk did get support from a few places. His sister, Candace Cameron Bure (Full House’s DJ) retweeted someone who wrote, “Who knew Kirk Cameron would be so divisive. From ‘Growing Pains’ to conservative politics. Energetic, robust @piersmorgan interview 9p.”

Alec Baldwin’s brother Stephen also tweeted, “GREAT JOB Kirk !!! Let's pray one day Piers Morgan finds true Salvation, God Bless !@kirkcameron @piersmorgan.”

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation spoke out against Kirk Cameron, saying, “In this interview, Kirk Cameron sounds even more dated than his 1980s TV character. Cameron is out of step with a growing majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation.”
