Back in the ‘80s, the Care Bears were by far the coolest cloud-dwelling creatures. Tenderheart, Funshine, Cheer Bear, and their Cousins filled the world with rainbows, laughter, and songs. Grumpy Bear was there, too. The Hub is trying to recapture the magic with their new series Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot. Entertainment Weekly has the first look at a clip from the premiere, which airs June 2 at 8:00 a.m.

“It’s been 30 years since the Care Bears first hit the scene, and they are more popular than ever!” executive producer Sarah Finn tells EW. In addition to the bears with familiar tummy symbols, a newbie is joining the rainbow-colored ranks. “The newest resident of Care-a-Lot, Wonderheart Bear, is silly, sweet, and full of joy and is by far the youngest Care Bear,” says Finn. Excuse us, but we’re quite sure Baby Hugs and Tugs would resent that implication. They’re still in diapers, for care’s sake.

Along with a new character, the 2012 incarnations of the Care Bears have also gotten a facelift. While their core traits are still proudly displayed on their “belly badges” (Grumpy is clinically depressed, Harmony sings incessantly, and Cheer Bear is her own pep squad), these bears have attitude. For example, Funshine Bear is like a yellower, more toned-down Michelangelo of Ninja Turtles fame. Not only does he ride a tubular skateboard, he drops words such as “funtabulous” and “kickin’.” Also, based on the video below, we’re pretty sure Grumpy is a drinker.

The new show is CG animated, unlike the wildly popular My Little Pony reboot, Friendship Is Magic, which also airs on Hub. Perhaps the network is hoping the “bronies” will latch onto the Care Bears the same way. Or should we call them Care Bros?
