On Lifetime’s new super sexy show The Client List, Jennifer Love Hewitt gets to show off some controversial skills as Riley Parks, a masseuse who decides to give select clients a little extra something something on the side — to support her family.
Based on a TV movie that garnered the former Ghost Whisperer star some critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination, the actress’ new endeavor (she’s also producing and directing) takes a deeper look at the lengths to which a mother will go to provide for her kids in times of desperation.
But as J.Love’s lead character finds ways to justify her actions, not everyone in her Texas suburb would be thrilled to find out how the small-town girl is supporting herself.
“I think my character, Lacey, would have a real crisis of faith,” says Rebecca Field, who plays Riley’s best friend from childhood. “She really has a deep love for this girl and knows that she’s worth so much more than giving extras and handies on the side. I think that would be a real hard thing for my character to understand or come to terms with.”
Riley’s dark secret dominates the first season of the show, which is loosely based on a true story about a prostitution scandal in Odessa, Texas. The single mom’s attempt to live a double life is bound to raise some suspicion.
“I think in the first couple episodes, everyone’s a bit curious because all of a sudden you start hearing, ‘She paid her mortgage in cash.’ And there are some funky, little tips that start tipping everyone off,” says Rebecca. “She finds a way to excuse her way out of it, but that becomes harder and harder as the series goes on. Before the end of the season, there’s going to be something big that happens.”
The world’s oldest profession naturally provides for plenty of storytelling, but not all the show’s drama goes on within the walls of the massage parlor. In the show’s second episode Riley will discover some secrets that her husband — who abandoned her — has been keeping from her.
“Riley stumbles upon a phone number in a jacket that her husband has left behind, and that her son has been wearing,” reveals Rebecca. “She’s left wondering whether or not he’s had an affair and that’s why he deserted her, and what role this woman played in her husband’s life. It will reveal something very interesting about her husband.”
From there on things will only escalate.
“I think by the midway point of our 10 episodes, things really kick into high gear,” Rebecca tells Wetpaint Entertainment. “I think people are really going to enjoy the show. It’s a little funny, a little sweet. It’s a lot naughty. But it’s also about really great relationships, which I always think people find riveting.”
