While we’ll never know what caused the rift between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes (thanks in part to her filing for divorce in New York), some speculate that Scientology — a religion Tom is very enthusiastic about — played a role in the demise of their marriage. However, a recent New York Post article claims the church was actually responsible for getting them together.

Andrew Morton, author of an unauthorized biography on Tom Cruise, writes in the Post, “Since the beginning of the TomKat love fest, which began with the diminutive actor bouncing up and down on Oprah’s couch, [former high-ranking Scientologists] have known that the romance was as carefully choreographed by Scientology as his 42nd birthday party.” According to Morton, Tom’s best friend, Scientology leader David Misgavige, helped select Katie to be Tom’s future wife shortly after Cruise split from Penelope Cruz in January 2004.

Tom and Katie didn’t step out in public until April 2005, and before they got together, Morton claims the casting process was long. Amongst the women Misgavige and his wife, Shelly, reportedly tried to set Tom up with were then-19-year-old Yolanda Pecoraro, Jennifer Garner, Sofia Vergara,  Erika Christensen (who is also a Scientologist), Scarlett Johansson, and Jessica Alba. In 2009, The Daily Beast asked Vergara about her past relationship with Tom, and the actress laughed and said, “I don’t want to talk about that!”

In an October 2004 interview with Seventeen magazine, Katie said, "I think every little girl dreams about her wedding. I used to think I was going to marry Tom Cruise.” That interview, Morton claims, prompted Tom Cruise’s setup committee to seek her out as a potential third wife for the actor. Regardless of how they met, the couple moved quickly, announcing Katie’s pregnancy (with daughter Suri) in October 2005 and marrying in November 2006.

It could be an orchestrated relationship — or just a couple helping their friend find romance.
