If you tuned in for last week’s series premiere of Mindy Kaling’s new FOX comedy The Mindy Project, then you undoubtedly giggled at the opposites-attract friendship between cantankerous doc Danny Castellano (Chris Messina) and his semi-neurotic co-worker Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling).

Naturally, we’re already counting down the episodes until these two go from bickering buddies (in scrubs) to unlikely lovers (in scrubs) — and star Chris Messina doesn’t disagree that their “love-hate kind of a thing” could turn into TV’s next great office romance.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Let’s talk about the inevitable romance between Danny and Mindy.

Chris Messina: We have a love-hate kind of thing but I don’t know, I don’t know where it’s going to go but it’s definitely got that kind of Moonlighting vibe. Remember how Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd were? They wanted to choke each other but kind of loved each other.

So what do Danny and Mindy love to hate about each other?

They’re so different. I think they’re both great doctors, but the way she handles her social life and sort of brings her social life into the office is kind of annoying to Danny. And Danny can be kind of rigid and has a certain old-school discipline that she doesn’t have that’s probably really annoying to her.

What is it like having Mindy Kaling for a boss?

Awesome. She’s so cool. I mean it’s kind of incredible because she’s writing and acting and producing and casting and editing, and she’s so cool and so mellow and we laugh a lot.

Tell me something about her that we wouldn’t know!

Well, you know, you probably know this, but she hasn’t been able to show that much of herself as an actress because on The Office she’s in for a couple scenes here and there, and in movies she’s here and there. She’s really funny! On this show I think she’s going to show everybody that she’s an incredible actress. She’s so likable and she’s so funny, but she’s also got such a big heart. The show is really funny but it also deals with some real serious things and I think you’ll see what a great actress she is.

The Mindy Project airs tonight at 9:30/8:30c on FOX.
