How do you solve a problem like Andrea (Laurie Holden) on The Walking Dead Season 3?

She let her friend Michonne (Danai Gurira) leave Woodbury solo, opting to stick around and flirt with The Governor (David Morrissey), eventually ending up in bed with him on Season 3, Episode 6, "Hounded." We set up a "How do you feel about Andrea" poll, because she was one of our favorite characters by the end of Season 2 and we were frustrated to see her fall into a role where she's defined by her sexuality. Instead of being an ass-kicking sharpshooter, she's The Girl Who Falls For Alpha Male Psychos. First Shane, now the Governor. Yes, the audience knows more than Andrea about the Gov’s dark side, but that's a frustrating decision on the showrunners' parts — to make her look foolish in the eyes of the viewers while giving, say, Merle (Michael Rooker) some great one-liners so he's more entertaining than the racist jerk we met on Season 1.

Comic book writer and executive producer Robert Kirkman talked to Entertainment Weekly about Episode 6, and the EW writer said he found it hard to begrudge Andrea and the Gov their moment of happiness.

"I agree with that," Kirkman said. "I’m definitely seeing stuff on the Internet where people are saying, 'Oh my gosh, how is Andrea caught under his spell?' When I think about it I could easily be caught under David Morrissey’s spell. You know, the viewer is aware of all these things that are going on behind the scenes. But, at face value, this guy is very kind, very hospitable, and super handsome, and he’s in this fantastic town. If I was running around in the woods hacking up zombies for a year I can’t definitely say I wouldn’t sleep with him."

But she chose this new "super handsome" guy and this cushy town over her friend, who saved her life at the end of Season 2 when the prison group just left her for dead. Sisters before Misters, Andrea!

The truth about The Gov will come out at some point. As Kirkman told The Hollywood Reporter, "There's a lot of crazy and explosive stuff on the horizon and whether or not Andrea is witness to that, we'll have to see. It's not going to go too long without her noticing the heads in the fish tank or some of the other things that are on the undercurrent here." Yeah, the zombie heads. Plus, Andrea still doesn't know about The Gov's zombie daughter, Penny. Hopefully Andrea will see the light, reunite with Michonne and give the prison group a piece of her mind for abandoning her. Until then, we just have to suffer through a bad romance.
